What is Intravenous Sedation?

Intravenous sedation is an ideal solution for patients who are very anxious of dental treatment. We use a medication before your treatment to make you feel less anxious and more relaxed. The sedative is given by injection into a vein in the arm or back of the hand (intravenous).

It makes you feel drowsy and you are less aware of what is happening, however you do remain awake throughout and will still be able to communicate verbally with us.

This is not a general anaesthetic - you will be awake throughout and aware of your surroundings, but you will feel very relaxed.

Following your treatment you will be required to stay at the practice until your clinician is satisfied that you are well enough to be accompanied home. For 24 hours after the procedure, your coordination will be affected and you should not undertake skilled tasks.

What are the benefits of sedation?

  • Reduced anxiety, for much more relaxed dental treatment
  • Sedation enables the clinician to undertake the procedure with greater ease and safety
  • You will remember little or nothing about the procedure afterwards
  • Intravenous sedation avoids the use of general anaesthetic (GA) and the risks associated with it
