Dental Crowns

The idea behind a crown is that it is an artificial restoration that fits snugly over the whole tooth once it has been prepared. Each crown is custom made for a tooth. There are a few different types of crowns, not every crown is suitable for your tooth so a full assessment is required.

Why might I need crowns?

  • To improve your smile
  • To protect a tooth that may of fractured
  • To prevent a tooth from breaking after root canal treatment
  • To protect a large filling

What materials can crowns be made from?

There is a wide variety of dental materials to choose from. Some crowns are made from gold whilst others are made from a gold alloy with a porcelain outer shell. All-ceramic crowns are also available and are becoming more popular. Our excellent laboratory allows perfect colour matching to your natural teeth.

Emax Crown

Emax crowns offer the best appearance, so they are commonly used for front teeth They can be slightly translucent like natural enamel to give a life like appearance.

Zirconia Crown

Zirconia crowns give the best combination of strength and aesthetics, although they are not quite as natural-looking as the Emax crowns.

Porcelain-metal Crowns

Porcelain-metal crowns have been around a long time. The crown is made of 2 layers: The superficial porcelain is bonded to an interior metal layer. The appearance can be very good, although porcelain-metal crowns do not share the translucency of Emax crowns. If the gum recedes, a dark line can sometimes be seen at the crown margin where the metal shines through.

Gold Crowns

Gold crowns have been around a very long time. The alloy is composed of several metals to give the best balance of strength, durability and accuracy of fit. The only disadvantage of gold crowns is their appearance. Gold crowns are very high strength.

How do you prepare and fit a dental crown?

Fitting a crown takes two visits. At the first visit your dentist will prepare the tooth and will fit a provisional crown to protect your tooth until your next appointment. The lab will make a crown specifically for you which will be fitted at your second visit. Once you are happy with the crown and how it looks, it will be cemented firmly into place.
