Information for parents and guardians in relation to children who are not brought to their appointments

Our practice aims to ensure that children in active treatment with our practice maintain consistent access to necessary dental care, but we also must ensure fair use of our NHS resources and appointments.

Children not being brought to appointments, or the parent/guardian cancelling a child’s appointment at short notice, results in:

• Inconsistent care for that child
• Higher risk of pain/swelling/infection in future
• Wasted NHS appointment time (which is already very scarce)
• Increased waiting times for other children to be seen

Due to the national NHS capacity issues, NHS appointments are very limited and so wasted appointments must be minimised.

In light of this, this policy has been established to address occasions where children are repeatedly not brought to their appointments:

• If a child is not brought to two scheduled appointments within a 12-month period, without providing adequate notice (a minimum of 24 hours before the appointment), we would be unable to offer further appointments for the child at the practice.
• If a child is not brought to their first appointment at the practice, we would be unable to offer further appointments for the child at the practice.
• A minimum of 24 hours notice must be given to cancel a child’s appointment, to avoid the above consequences being applied. This can be done via phone, voicemail or email, and can be done on days the practice is closed, if the child’s appointment is on the first working day back after the practice reopens.

We do understand that very often the reasons for children not being brought to appointments are genuine, and the aim of this policy is not to penalise children or their parents. The sole aim of this policy is to maximise the availability and accessibility of very scarce NHS resources.

Top tips for your child's oral health!

Brush your child's teeth twice a day, including once at bedtime

All children should use adult-strength toothpaste (1450ppm Fluoride), for maximum protection of teeth. This should be a "smear" until 3 years, then a pea-sized amount after that

Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks to mealtimes only, never in between meals
Ideally have varnish applied to your child's teeth at the dentist every 3 months

You child's oral health and fluoride varnish....

What is fluoride varnish?

Fluoride varnish is a highly concentrated form of fluoride which is applied to the tooth 's surface, by a dental health care professional. It is not a permanent varnish but due to its adherent nature it is able to stay in contact with the tooth surface for several hours.

How does fluoride varnish prevent cavities?

Fluoride varnish leads to heavy remineralisation of the enamel surface, and subsequent acid attacks will allow fluoride ions to penetrate more deeply into the tooth structure.
